The goal of my research is to create interactive learning activities in which students engage in group problem solving and think critically about challenging concepts. In this project, students play out what might happen in a zombie apocalypse. They document the infection rate, formulate hypotheses to control the outbreak, and use graphing tools to model functions that fit the data. This type of problem solving cultivates deeper understanding of mathematical concepts in the classroom and also how these concepts relate to real world problems, like modeling infectious disease.
