Transfer Students Don’t Take Side Quests: A Case Study of Transfer Participation in Extracurricular Opportunities at a Hispanic Serving Institution

Fantasy games consist of one main story route and contain smaller, optional yet excellent opportunities for growth in the form of side quests one can take before returning to the main route. This serves as an analogy for a typical undergraduate experience – side quests being extracurricular opportunities that are beneficial but not essential to the attainment of a degree. Through focus groups this study intends to discern whether transfer students at California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) are aware of these extracurricular opportunities and if they participate in them voluntarily; if not, what are the common factors that prevent transfer students from participating in offered resources and opportunities? And how do transfer students learn about these opportunities?
